The BTU is part of the Elbenwald Festival

On all three days of the festival, students of Biotechnology and Materials Chemistry will show those interested how to create their own personal jewelry. Anyone who feels like it can simply drop by. Everyone from the age of five can take part.

From August 11-13, 2023, the annual Elbenwald Festival will take place in Cottbus' Spreeauenpark, where visitors from all over Germany are expected. Whether mystical or funny - lots of fantasy figures will dominate the cityscape, whole families will dress up in costumes and have fun. The BTU will be there.

At the edge of the Quidditch field is the BTU booth, where students will offer a free workshop on electrochemical engraving of stainless steel pendants. Whether you're young (five and up) or a little older, you're welcome to create your own little souvenir of the event . Materials Chemistry and Biotechnology students will also be on hand to answer questions about studying. Information materials on studying at the BTU will also be available. The booth will be staffed from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Key rings or jewelry are possible: in particular, the smaller visitors* can simply punch out a desired motif from adhesive foil (heart, star and more). For the artistically talented, scissors and scalpels are ready to create their own desired motif at will, creativity and skill, for example, with initials or fantasy motifs.

Once the foil is ready, it is glued to the pendant in different colors and shapes and pressed firmly. After that, a cotton swab is dipped in salt solution, connected to a battery by means of alligator clips and now the engraving can begin: To do this, the stainless steel must rust at lightning speed. Thus, the free areas of the pasted motif become rough (from rust), while the rest remains polished, shiny stainless steel. After about two minutes, the motif is engraved, and the pendant is wiped to remove any residual rust. The adhesive backing is peeled off and the personalized pendant is ready. - A nice, personal souvenir or souvenir that can easily be taken along or attached to a chain or keychain.

Note: Materials, safety glasses and gloves are provided. BTU staff member Theresa Pohl and three students will be on hand during the specified times to provide assistance, support and guidance.
