Symposium Participation 2023: Focus on early childhood education

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) and the city of Cottbus are jointly organizing a symposium on the topic of 'Participation' on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cottbus Townhouse and the Piccolo Theater on Erich Kästner Platz.

The event, under the auspices of the Chair of Education Sciences at the BTU, is aimed on the one hand at educators and other pedagogues and on the other hand at all those interested in the topic of early childhood education and participation (e.g. participation, involvement, participation).

The program of lectures and workshops will shed light on essential aspects of participation from different perspectives, which are to be discussed and further considered in relation to perceived needs, so that even the youngest children can become an active part of our society.

A highlight of the program is the opening lecture "What is participation?" by  Prof. Dr. Gerd E. Schäfer - Professor Emeritus of Early Childhood Education at the University of Cologne, author of important textbooks such as "Education Begins at Birth" and "Education through Participation", who is increasingly dedicated to the further training of professionals in the field of day care centers.

Among other things, the day will focus on the following questions: Why is participation so important - and how can we make everyday pedagogical practice participatory? How do we deal with hurdles and everyday pitfalls? Solutions will be sought together and needs for the future will be identified.

Prof. Dr. Juliane Noack Napoles, Head of the Chair of Education Sciences at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, emphasizes: "Particularly for the transformation processes in Lusatia, it is important for everyone to participate. Children, too, are members of society, which is why participation must be a matter of course in everyday (educational) life, even in the first years of life. This idea also guided the development of the new study programme for primary school teachers, which is now starting in the winter semester. The importance of the topic of participation for the study programme is already evident from the fact that a professorship with the denomination Education Sciences with the focus on heterogeneity and participation for the teaching profession has been established - which I currently hold on an interim basis."

Outlook:
For March 16, 2024, a statewide follow-up event to the Participation Day on the topic of 'Social Work with Children' is already being prepared by the Chair of Education Sciences in cooperation with the Education and Science Union at the BTU in Senftenberg.
