Dr. Roh Pin Lee takes over endowed professorship "Decarbonization and Transformation of Industry" in Faculty 5

Prof. Roh Pin Lee has taken over the chair of "Decarbonization and Transformation of Industry" in the Institute of Philosophy and the Social Sciences as of October 1, 2023.

The establishment of a chair for "Decarbonization and Transformation of Industry" at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), is intended to support and accelerate the decarbonization process of energy-intensive industry in Germany. This will contribute to the German climate protection goals of greenhouse gas reduction of 65 percent by 2030 (compared to 1990) and greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. The professorship is part of the "Decarbonization Cluster" in Cottbus, the core of which is the Competence Center for Climate Protection in Energy Intensive Industries (KEI).

Prof. Dr. Roh Pin Lee is an acknowledged expert in this field and has an excellent international network. With her focus on an integrated, i.e. socio-techno-economic-ecological-political (STEEP) assessment of industrial processes of energy- and carbon-intensive industries, she builds a bridge between engineering, business and social sciences. Prof. Lee thus lays the foundation for intersectoral communication and collaboration at the interface of science, business, policy, and society.

Her chair likewise implies an international dimension, as Prof. Lee is addressing globally oriented issues such as

  • the transition to a circular carbon economy,
  • the recycling of strategic minerals and metals for the circular economy, and
  • transition to a CO2-neutral and green industry in her research.

addressed in her research.

Her teaching focuses on science communication, among other topics. Students should be empowered to communicate both technology innovations and complex and explanation-intensive topics of decarbonization and transformation of industry to the public and decision makers through innovative formats (including virtual media, exhibitions) (knowledge transfer).

Prof. Lee habilitated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where she was awarded the venia legendi for technology assessment, environmental and resource management. She received her MBA in International Management of Resources and Environment and her PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) from the university of technology at Bergakademie Freiberg. Prof. Lee received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the National University of Singapore in 2000.

Prof. Lee is also a research department head for technology assessment at the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering (IEC) at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
