Annual Congress of the Society for Music Theory (GMTH) 2024 to be held at BTU

From 04.10.-06.10.2024, the Institute of Instrumental and Vocal Performance and Teaching at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg is organising a major international conference, the annual conference of the GMTH (Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie), on the Sachsendorf campus and partly also on the main campus.

The society unites several hundred members, primarily from Germany, Austria and Switzerland; however, members from other countries are also active, as intensive networking with numerous sister societies worldwide has already been initiated. The fact that this important congress is coming to Cottbus promises something essential: the eyes of the specialist disciplines of music theory and musicology will be focussed on our institute.

The Cottbus edition of the GMTH congress will take place under the motto "Music Theory in Transition". Both regional and current challenges affecting our university will thus be transferred to the discipline of music theory. Numerous resulting paths of thought and potential content will create an equally open and specific theme for the 2024 edition of the congress series. Four parallel sections on the following sub-themes are planned:

(1) Then and now. Upheavals in the discourse on music theory (Keynote: Prof. Dr Gesine Schröder, Leipzig/Vienna)

(2) Post-pandemic era, internationalisation and digitalisation. Challenges of music theory in current research and teaching (Keynote: Prof. Dr Ulrich Kaiser, Munich)

(3) Music theory in the fin de siècle (Keynote: Prof. Dr Stefan Keym, Leipzig)

and

(4) Fryderyk Chopin and the music theory of his training period (Keynote: Prof. Dr Halina Goldberg, Bloomington/USA)

The latter section takes into account the proximity to the specialist discourse in neighbouring Poland. Numerous free contributions and book presentations complete the programme. This year's "Autumn School", a music theory masterclass for music theory majors, will also deal with the question of the existence of Sorbian music theory. The range of content and styles extends even further: a concert at the Gladhouse in Cottbus and a workshop with the band Anders are also planned. Another highlight of the conference will be a concert with the internationally active professors Simone Schröder (Singing) and Wolfgang Glemser (Piano), who teach at the Gladhouse. The opening event will feature the world premiere of a work composed especially for the event by the now internationally successful composer Giordano Bruno do Nascimento (born 1981), who has his musical roots in Cottbus.

As varied and colourful as the programme may seem, the motto "Music Theory in Transition" is the common thread linking the lectures, reflecting the current situation of the discourse in the field on the one hand and, on the other, can be taken literally with regard to the venue of Cottbus.
