The new game "Monopoly Cottbus" is now available - the BTU is also involved

Cottbus and the surrounding area are in Monopoly fever. On 19 November 2024, a version of the world's most famous board game adapted to the university city was presented in the upper foyer of Cottbus Town Hall in the presence of Lord Mayor Tobias Schick. The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is prominently represented on the game board.

The brand new Monopoly Cottbus features the Information, Communication and Media Centre (IKMZ) of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, symbolising the entire university.

The secret has finally been revealed as to which street came out on top in an online vote with more than 8,000 votes in the favour of the inhabitants of Brandenburg's second largest city. Out of 139 proposed streets, 22 made it onto the playing field. The frontrunner in the vote, the Altmarkt, received more than 500 votes.
In addition to the 22 streets, other details of the game were also individualised and adapted to the city of Cottbus. For example, the texts on the event and community cards were changed and the packaging and playing field were customised with numerous sights of the city. "During the layout process, it once again became clear how much Cottbus has to offer. But not all the relevant streets, sights and attractions made it into the game, there simply wasn't enough space," says Florian Freitag from Zwickauer polar|1 GmbH, which developed the game together with the Düsseldorf games publisher Winning Moves.
Based on the online voting, the event and community cards were also adapted to Cottbus. For example, one card reads "You are the first to swim across the Cottbus Baltic Sea. Pull in M 100." Another reads: "Discover Cottbus on a city tour and start at the central square in the old town. Move forward to the Altmarkt."
Mayor Tobias Schick is also looking forward to the new Monopoly Cottbus edition, especially because of the customisation on Cottbus. "Playing is fun for the whole family, it brings people together - that's exactly what we want for our city," he says. He expects a lot of excitement from the game, combined with local colour. "It's something else to play Monopoly in your own home town," says the Lord Mayor.
Incidentally, Monopoly Cottbus is already a big hit: "We have more than 6,000 reservations and have already received many enquiries from book and toy retailers who want to sell the game," continues Florian Freitag.

The university is one of four highlight fields on the Monopoly board and players can feel like a researcher for a brief moment when they draw one of the TV message cards. "The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is a formative part of the identity of the city of Cottbus - and of course the city of Senftenberg - and therefore undoubtedly belongs in the Cottbus edition of the classic Monopoly game," emphasises Ilka Seer, press spokesperson for the BTU.
"Our IKMZ - the Information, Communication and Media Centre - is much more than just a university library. It is a lively and dynamic meeting place that funds dialogue between various stakeholders in Cottbus and beyond, is open to all those with an interest in knowledge and presents the latest research findings in the Science Gallery and temporary exhibitions," says Ilka Seer, explaining the choice of motif.
