BTU scientist with outstanding book publication: German as a specialised and foreign language

Dr habil. Michael Szurawitzki, interim professor of German and German didactics in the primary school teacher training study programme at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), is publishing an epochal handbook together with assistant professor Dr Patrick Wolf-Farré from the University of Vienna.

The handbook German as a specialised and foreign language published by De Gruyter Wissenschaftsverlag, covers a comprehensive range of topics from the field of specialised languages and specialised language research on over 1,000 pages in 59 articles. Work on this handbook began in 2018 and was slowed down several times by the coronavirus pandemic, but was never jeopardised.

Interim professor Dr Michael Szurawitzki explains: "Even a change to co-editor Wolf-Farré, who has worthily replaced his colleague Thorsten Roelcke (TU Berlin), could not slow down our drive to map out current research trends in our handbook. We would like to thank all the authors for their dedicated work. We are particularly pleased that we were able to raise the necessary resources to make the handbook globally accessible free of charge as open access."

Programme Director Prof. Dr Juliane Noack Napoles is delighted with the renowned collaborators at the Institute for Education Sciences"There is an extremely inspiring and motivating (academic) climate at the institute, which is not least due to the expertise and commitment of the staff and the associated interdisciplinary exchange between them."

After the work is known to be before the work, and so Michael Szurawitzki is already planning his next projects, namely not only an expanded new edition of the handbook that takes into account the growing influence of AI, but also research into the advertising language of German-speaking refugees in Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s (lecture at the Wrocław branch of the German Language Society, live broadcast 29 November 2024, 14:30-15:30, link: https://gfds.de/events/werbesprache-in-deutschsprachigen-shanghaier-exilperiodika/) and observations on the development of the leading Chinese messaging service WeChat, among other things with a decidedly didactic focus on writing (preliminary work on this can be downloaded in book form at https://elibrary.narr.digital/ with the search term "Szurawitzki").
