Online symposium: School without hate

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) invites interested educators to an online symposium on Tuesday, 14 January 2025, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on the topic of "Effective strategies for dealing with hate speech at schools". The event is aimed at teachers, social pedagogues and school administrators in particular.

Numerous programmes and measures are offered to schools and teachers to tackle the problem of hate speech. The variety of programmes and the different focuses, methods and formats make it difficult for practitioners to make a suitable selection. Now, for the first time, a systematic quality assessment of national and international anti-hatespeech programmes is available as a result of the project "Effective strategies for dealing with hate speech in schools" carried out by the Chair of Educational Psychology in Health Professions at BTU. Taking into account practical and scientific criteria, it supports educators in the selection and implementation of suitable programmes.

Registration for the online symposium please register by 10 January 2025 at: https://www.b-tu.de/fg-paedagogische-psychologie/forschung/wirksame-strategien-zum-umgang-mit-hate-speech/anmeldung
Participation is free of charge and access data will be sent by email in good time before the start of the event.

Prof. Dr Ludwig Bilz, Head of the Chair of Educational Psychology in Health Professions at BTU, is the scientific director of the symposium. He emphasises: "Hate speech against certain social groups is a phenomenon that we experience on the Internet and that does not stop at schools. This is shown by data from our DFG project. I am therefore delighted that we have found so many anti-hatespeech programmes that are suitable for use in schools during our research as part of a follow-up project. At the symposium, we want to inform school practitioners about how they can get an overview of the quality of these programmes and what we know so far about their effectiveness. I would like to thank the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth for funding this study."

During the online symposium, the most important results of the systematic quality assessment of 27 anti-hatespeech programmes will be summarised briefly and practically for the participants. Together, the participants will reflect on how they can take quality criteria into account when making selection decisions at their respective schools. They will also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with two best-practice programmes: the "Hateless" programme of the University of Potsdam and the "PLEASE WHAT?! Communication on the Net" programme of the Baden-Württemberg State Media Centre, Stuttgart & Karlsruhe.

Background:
On the internet and in everyday school life, children and young people increasingly encounter derogatory comments about people based on their religion, origin, gender, sexual orientation or appearance, i.e. about people as members of certain social groups. This is hate speech. Studies show that hate speech can have negative consequences for children and young people, for coexistence at school and for society as a whole.
