Honoured with the Heinz Ludwig Horney Prize

The Institut für Umwelttechnik und Recycling Senftenberg e.V. (IURS) has honoured Jonas Hempel's achievements in completing his Bachelor's degree at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) with the Heinz Ludwig Horney Prize.

Jonas Hempel studied in the Business Administration and Engineering - Production Administration study programme. He was honoured for his excellent bachelor's thesis on "3D printing tests with Ultrafuse 316L".

IURS chairperson Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil Sylvio Simon and deputy chairperson Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peggy Näser presented him with the award at the IURS annual meeting on 3 December 2024.

His supervisors, teaching and research fellows Stephan Hernschier and Michael Weist, had nominated Jonas Hempel for the Heinz Ludwig Horney Prize and attested to his exceptional commitment and determination in his work. For Jonas Hempel, recognising problems and developing and implementing solutions is a matter of course. In his final thesis, he investigated the possibilities of printing stainless steel with a 3D printer using the fused filament fabrication (FFF) process.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering, the prizewinner is currently continuing his studies at BTU on the Master's degree programme in Business Administration and Engineering.

The Institute for Environmental Technology and Recycling Senftenberg e.V. (IURS) has awarded the Heinz Ludwig Horney Prize annually since 2004 for bachelor theses that support the aims of the organisation in a special way.
With this prize, the IURS commemorates the achievements of Prof. Dr Heinz-Ludwig Horney, founding dean of the Mechanical Engineering department at the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences, who died in 2010 at the age of 83 in his home town of Bochum.
The IURS was founded in 1997 in order to reduce the great pent-up demand for scientific and technical research and consulting facilities in the field of Environmental and Process Technology in the south of Brandenburg. The institute, which currently has more than 40 members - current and former members of BTU as well as companies - is based at the university's Senftenberg site. It deals with environmental research and application-oriented technological research and development, assessment and consulting and has already produced numerous innovations and patents as well as realised projects.
