The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region - an example for other metropolitan regions?

The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region is an interesting example for many other regions in terms of its highly developed institutional integration and cooperation. Prof. Hirschl shed light on the extent to which this also applies to cooperation and collaboration in the field of climate protection at the regional conference of the Hamburg metropolitan region in Wismar.

The Hamburg metropolitan region, which extends across four federal states - Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - and is home to almost 5.4 million people spread across 17 districts, three independent cities and the city of Hamburg, is connected to each other via various committees and endeavours to strengthen intra-regional cooperation and the international competitiveness of the region in this way.

At its annual regional conference, it also seeks to exchange ideas with other regions. In this context, Prof. Hirschl was invited to give a presentation at this year's regional conference in Wismar on 9 January 2025, focusing on today's cooperation in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region, but also on the potentials and necessities in the future with regard to jointly achieving climate neutrality. Accordingly, Prof. Hirschl shed light on this in his presentation"Climate neutrality - can only be achieved together! A plea for urban-rural cooperation using the example of the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region", Prof Hirschl highlighted the potential for cooperation in various areas of the energy transition and climate protection, as well as climate adaptation, which he believes is necessary and should be expanded.
