BTU takes a stand against violent attacks and attempts at intimidation in the region

As an international university with regional roots, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) expressly positions itself against all forms of discrimination and violence. The BTU is aware of its special responsibility for its students and employees, also in view of current social developments.

The BTU has observed the recent escalation of the social atmosphere in Lusatia with great concern. After students in Cottbus had already been persecuted and physically attacked in December 2024 and February 2025, more than 30 masked people prepared to use violence attacked the ‘Jamm’ youth club in Senftenberg on the night of 1 to 2 March 2025 and tried to break into the building. The level-headed reaction of the people responsible on site prevented anything worse from happening. Police and state security are investigating, as witnesses have stated that a political background cannot be ruled out. Faculties, institutions and members of BTU have already expressed their solidarity with those affected.

BTU President Prof. Gesine Grande shows her deep concern: "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the appalling willingness to use violence and the aggression with which these attacks on people are carried out, seemingly without cause! Together with all our partners and allies, we support all those who stand up for openness to the world, tolerance and a democratic culture."
