Forensic investigation methods at the pupils university
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Thomas Fischer, Head of the Central Analytics Laboratory at BTU, will inform participants about forensic investigation methods. Registration is not required.
The size and developmental stages of fly larvae and pupae, for example, provide information about their age. As some blowflies lay their eggs immediately after death, the time between a fatal event and the discovery of the body can be determined. Other species lay their eggs in open wounds, which is utilised in so-called maggot therapy. On the other hand, periods of neglect of people in need of care can be determined.
The lecture will provide an insight into the methods of forensic entomology - a branch of forensics in which entomology is used to solve legal cases. The latest research results from BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg will also be presented.
The BTU's Forensic Sciences and Engineering master's programme provides in-depth knowledge of forensic science.
The BTU's pupils university offers interested pupils the opportunity to understand scientific and technical topics and is designed to awaken a desire for discovery and research. This gives them the chance to develop their own skills and expand their talents. Together with Sparkasse Niederlausitz, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is offering an attractive new programme in which interested students can work on various projects in small teams and consolidate their knowledge on excursions.
Outlook:
The next lecture of the pupils university for participants from years seven to ten is on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, at 4 p.m. in the Central Lecture Hall Building, Audimax 2, on the main campus of the BTU Cottbus with the following topic: Brain and computer united: How we can influence virtual worlds with our thoughts.
The referent will be Dr Marius Klug from the university's Chair of Neuroadaptive Human-Technology Interaction.
