Fireside chat at the BTU: Rethinking urban development.
On 1 July 2025, students from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) are inviting you to a public fireside chat on the topic of "Rethinking urban development. Triple inner development between aspiration and reality". The event will shed light on this sustainable approach to Urban Planning, in which land-saving construction, urban greenery and the mobility and transport turnaround are considered in an integrated manner.
The so-called triple inner development combines structural redensification with the preservation of urban greenery and the promotion of sustainable mobility. This model is becoming increasingly important in particular in growing and climate-adapted cities - and thus also in research and teaching at BTU. The fireside chat is organised by Master's students of Regional and Urban Planning, who want to use the event to build a bridge between research, practice and the university.
Insights from theory and practice will be provided by two recognised experts, among others:
- Maria Feil, M. Sc. urban and regional planner at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and employee at MACHLEIDT - Städtebau und Stadtentwicklung, will contribute practice-oriented perspectives on urban planning processes.
- This is complemented by the contribution of Daniela Michalski from the German Institute of Urban Affairs. She was co-author of the Federal Environment Agency's (DUH) policy paper on this topic and will shed light on the political and conceptual background to the model.
Following the keynote speeches, students, planners, politicians and interested members of the public will discuss the challenges and opportunities of implementing triple inner city development in our cities. A get-together with drinks and snacks will round off the evening.
For many years, Urban Planning has increasingly recognised that a resource-conserving approach to the finite commodity of land must also include the preservation and expansion of green and open spaces in inner-city and heavily built-up urban areas. With the concept of dual inner-city development, the promotion of urban greenery was established as an integral part of sustainable urban development. In 2023, the Federal Environment Agency proposed an extension of this approach to include space-saving concepts for transport and mobility with the guiding principle of triple inner development. The aim is to design housing, green spaces and transport holistically in such a way that liveable, climate-adapted and healthy urban spaces are created.
The event starts at 18:00 in the Atelier Mies at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. Admission is free.
As part of the fireside chat, planners, politicians, students and interested members of the public will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the opportunities and challenges of triple internal development in our cities.
