The age-appropriate city
What is an age-appropriate and health-promoting city?
For me, an age-appropriate and health-promoting city is characterised by the removal of barriers and the continuous adaptation of the urban structure to the changing needs of older people. In addition to accessibility, health-promoting elements such as green spaces, short distances, exercise programmes and social and community activities are also important.
It was important for me to dedicate my bachelor's thesis to a topic that will become increasingly important in the future. In addition to climate change, demographic change is a crisis that cities are facing. What is exciting about this is that Urban Planning plays an important role in ensuring the quality of life of citizens. I was also interested to find out what influence the urban structure has on health. Health is particularly important for vulnerable people such as the elderly, which is why I looked at health promotion in addition to age-appropriate design.
What does old age mean to you personally?
As a young person, I am not very aware of ageing and am not susceptible to barriers. As part of my work, I was able to gain insights into what it feels like for older people. Many are physically restricted and feel alone. The idea of being restricted in old age is very frightening. This makes it all the more wonderful to be able to use Urban Planning to fund life in old age and strengthen cohesion.
How did you come to study the Urban Planning and Urban Design study programme in Cottbus?
I came across the Urban Planning and Urban Design study programme by chance on the internet. I already knew beforehand that I wanted to study something to do with Architecture or Housing Management. The Urban Planning study programme was presented on the Internet and I decided to go for it. When I looked at the locations in Germany, I chose BTU because of its good rating and its proximity to my home. I was able to gain a lot of experience during the three years of my studies. The projects and excursions to other cities were particularly interesting for me. The idea of creating new spaces for local people was very exciting for me.
