Focus on STEM education in schools

On 24 and 25 February 2026, teachers from secondary schools across Germany that are part of the MINT-EC aerospace technology cluster attended their second cluster meeting at the Cottbus main campus of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU).

The new thematic cluster of the national excellence school network MINT-EC. was launched at BTU in May 2024 with the aim of developing new teaching materials on the subject of aerospace engineering and advancing STEM education in schools. And so, following the welcome address by the Vice-President for Academic Affairs at BTU, Prof. Dr Peer Schmidt, the development of teaching materials was also the focus of the current cluster meeting, which once again took placeat the Chair of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics.

The highly committed educators work together here under the supervision of the chair's holder, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Egbers. The leadership of the aerospace technology cluster has now been transferred from Matthias König, Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasium Cottbus, to Katharina Stetter, Max-Born-Gymnasium Germering.

In addition to working in small groups on tasks for secondary levels I and II and exchanging ideas with Professor Egbers, the highlights of the current cluster meeting included experiments in the DLR_School_Lab and exciting guest lectures. Dr Feray Ünlü-Beqiraj from the DLR Space Agency presented the key research areas there. Dr Astrid Adrian-Ewald from Airbus Defence and Space GmbH spoke about the activities of Airbus in general and the AtmoFlow experiment in particular, which is being developed by Professor Egbers' department.

Background

BTU is an official university partner of the national excellence school network of schools with an upper secondary level and a strong profile in Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Technology- MINT-EC. The aims of the partnership are, in particular, to support pupils from schools with a focus on science and technology in their decision to study by introducing them to study options in the STEM subjects and to attract prospective students to study STEM subjects.

The MINT-EC thematic clusters are working groups of teachers and school administrators from MINT-EC schools that work together on overarching topics over several years. The aim is to create lively and practical STEM lessons with current impulses from research. The teachers involved in the programme work across national borders on the design of teaching materials and didactic methods as well as on the further development of school structures.
