Excellent supervision during the first year of study

According to the annual university rankings published by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), students at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) give top marks to the support provided at the start of their studies.

In this year’s ranking, which assessed Bachelor’s degree study programmes in Economics, Law and Social Work, BTU students took part in the subjects of Business Administration, Social Work, Business Informatics and Business Administration and Engineering

In all four subjects, BTU ranks among the top group in the ‘Support at the start of studies’ category. The organisation of studies, supervision by teaching staff and support during studies are also rated very positively, with an average of four out of five stars. The Social Work and Business Administration and Engineering study programmes in particular stand out for their excellent links to professional practice. Furthermore, the short periods of study for Social Work are noted as a positive feature. The Business Administration study programme performs particularly well in the academic sphere (publications, third-party funding and doctoral studies per professor).

Prof. Peer Schmidt, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the BTU, says: “Our experience shows that academic success depends largely on a good, successful start to one’s studies. To this end, we have created a range of initiatives at the BTU that our first-year students are happy to take advantage of. Furthermore, good support from teaching staff, as well as a sound technical and physical infrastructure, contribute to an optimal study experience. We place just as much emphasis on this as we do on the evaluation and reorientation of study programmes. Our rising student numbers confirm that we are on the right track.”

The CHE University Ranking, which has been published exclusively in the ZEIT Study Guide and on ZEIT ONLINE for more than twenty years, is the most comprehensive university comparison in the German-speaking world. It provides assessments of more than 10,000 study programmes at German universities. In addition to facts on study, teaching and research, it also assesses how students rate the practical relevance of their study programmes and career preparation measures.

The full CHE University Ranking, based on surveys of around 120,000 students, is available online at HeyStudium. This year’s ranking covers the subjects of Business Administration, Law, Social Work, Economics, Business Informatics, Business Administration and Engineering, Business Psychology, Business Law and Economic Sciences. Extracts from the ranking also appear in the new ZEIT Study Guide 2026/27.
