Sustainable housing concepts for the Grundbach estate in Olbersdorf

In May 2026, the Grundbach estate in Olbersdorf became a working site for architecture and urban planning students from Germany and the Czech Republic. As part of a workshop, students from the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) developed visions for the future of the former miners’ estate.

The insights gained on site are now being incorporated into the further development of the students’ projects. In particular, issues of urban planning and quality of life, the reuse of existing materials, resource-efficient demolition and sustainable transformation play a central role. The project funds academic exchange and cross-border collaboration between students from different disciplines. At the same time, participants gain practical experience in dealing with post-socialist settlement structures and learn about different planning and architectural approaches.

The workshop was supervised by the Kohout-Tichý Studio, ČVUT, the Cooperative Architecture Studio under the direction of Prof. Henri Praeger and Prof. Dr Jana Richter, and the Urban Design chair under the direction of Prof. Verena Schmidt. The project was hosted by KWV Kommunale Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft Olbersdorf mbH. Special thanks also go to Karsten Hummel and Martin Besta, representatives of KWV, who gave the participants a warm welcome, provided dedicated support throughout the weekend in terms of both organisation and content, and showed great openness to the students’ ideas.

The workshop was co-financed by EU funds from the Euroregion Neisse-Nisa-Nysa Small Projects Fund as part of the Interreg Saxony-Czech Republic 2021–2027 programme.
