Successful BTU debut in THE World University Rankings

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) made it into the top 40 per cent worldwide straight away. This result highlights how the BTU is making a name for itself internationally as a young, research-intensive university. For the latest ranking, published on 30 September 2026, 2,297 higher education institutions from 118 countries and territories were assessed.

The prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings compare universities in terms of their academic performance on the international stage. The focus is on five categories: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry. BTU took part for the first time and immediately secured a place amongst the top 1,000 worldwide.

“Our debut in the THE World University Rankings has been a success and raises the international profile of our achievements in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. The fact that we have immediately secured a place amongst the world’s top 1,000 universities is the result of BTU’s outstanding development in recent years. As a young, research-intensive university, we want to further raise BTU’s profile internationally. This result shows that we are on the right track – and it motivates us to continue along this path with determination,” emphasises BTU President Prof. Dr Gesine Grande.

Success in a significantly expanded international field of participants

Whilst fewer than 1,000 higher education institutions were included ten years ago, the latest edition features 2,297 institutions from 118 countries and territories – more than double the previous number. THE had collected data from a total of more than 3,000 higher education institutions for this round of the rankings. The BTU has thus established itself on its debut within a significantly expanded field of comparison.

Strong result across Germany

In the ‘International Outlook’ category, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg achieved 26th place out of 55 ranked German universities.

“The strong performance in the ‘International Outlook’ category underlines the BTU’s international profile. International students and researchers, as well as cross-border collaborations, are a defining feature of our university. The fact that this focus is clearly reflected in the THE ranking confirms our strategic direction and gives us further impetus to continue strengthening the BTU’s international networks,” says Prof. Dr Wolfram Berger, Vice President for Internationalisation at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are published by the British journal Times Higher Education. They assess the university as a whole based on its performance across five categories: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry. The current methodology comprises 18 performance indicators. The assessment takes into account, amongst other things, statistical data provided by the universities as well as bibliometric data from Elsevier’s Scopus database.
