About the lecture ‘The Fascination of Seeing – How Images Are Created in the Mind and in the Camera’
Participants in the Children’s University will learn how it is possible for them to see and why they can take photos with a camera, even though it has no eyes at all. Together with the speakers, they will explore what happens in their eyes when they look at the world around them and discover what takes shape in their minds. In the process, they’ll compare the eye and the camera: what do they have in common? How do they differ? And how does light ultimately become an image – in the mind or on a screen?
The Children’s University lectures are designed to spark an early interest in solving scientific problems and give children the chance to experience the atmosphere of a university.
In this way, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is already giving pupils in Years 3 to 6 the chance to get a taste of university life, whilst presenting approaches to solving everyday scientific phenomena in a way that is both child-friendly and exciting. This helps to foster formative experiences that are designed to spark the youngest children’s interest in science and break down any barriers to visiting a university.
Looking ahead:
The next Children’s University lectures will take place on Wednesday 11 November at 5 pm on the Campus Senftenberg and on Thursday 12 November at 3 pm and 5 pm on the BTU’s main campus in Cottbus, on the topic ‘A house made of concrete blocks: How people lived in the GDR’. The speaker is Constanze Kummer from the Institute for Building History and Art History at the BTU.
An excursion on the topic ‘Behind the scenes at the BTU canteen – The secret of the commercial kitchen’ will take interested pupils in Years 4 to 6 to the new canteen on the university’s main campus in Cottbus on Thursday, 22 October, from 3 pm to 5 pm.
