A field trip to the BTU canteen with the Children’s University

‘Behind the Scenes at the BTU Canteen – The Secrets of the Commercial Kitchen’ is the title of the event for interested pupils in Years 4 to 6, taking place on Thursday 22 October 2026, from 3 pm to 5 pm, as part of the Children’s University during the autumn half-term.

Not only do participants gain fascinating insights into the modern canteen at the University’s main campus in Cottbus, but they also get the chance to become professional chefs themselves. Together, they’ll prepare a delicious lentil and cheese patty with tomato sauce and homemade pasta. The children learn how food is prepared in a commercial kitchen for lots of hungry people and how simple ingredients are turned into delicious pasta. Put on your apron and let’s get started!

The canteen only reopened in January 2026 following extensive refurbishment. The new BTU canteen on the main campus in Cottbus serves up to 2,000 hot meals a day, ensuring a high-quality, student-focused lunch service. Alongside innovative menus featuring vegan options and international influences, a varied selection in the café – including fresh pasta from our own production, pizza, burgers, speciality coffees and sweet snacks – rounds off the offering. Attractive social spaces have been created both in the café on the ground floor and in the campus canteen on the upper floor.

As the number of participants in the Children’s University excursion is limited, please complete your registration as soon as possible by emailing kinderuni@b-tu.de.

Looking ahead:

The next Children’s University events will once again be lectures and will take place on Wednesday 11 November at 5 pm at the Campus Senftenberg and on Thursday 12 November at 3 pm and 5 pm at the BTU’s main campus in Cottbus. The speaker on the topic ‘A house made of concrete blocks: How people lived in the GDR’ is Constanze Kummer from the Institute for Building History and Art History at BTU.
