DEMENSCH travelling exhibition: ‘Everyday situations experienced by people with dementia’
The exhibition by the Alzheimer-Gesellschaft Brandenburg e.V. Selbsthilfe Demenz, which opened on 21 September as part of the World Alzheimer’s Day specialist forum, takes a different approach to the subject of dementia – namely, with humour.
In his prints, Peter Gaymann depicts the everyday lives of people with dementia, and his cartoons incisively highlight the core problems that they and their relatives face on a daily basis. The drawings vividly illustrate the effort it takes to find one’s way in a life with dementia and to cope successfully with it.
A relaxed approach can work if one does not correct every supposed mistake and insist on being right. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if someone looks for their glasses in the fridge instead of the dishwasher.
Peter Gaymann is one of the most successful and popular cartoonists in Germany. Together with the gerontologist Prof. Dr Thomas Klie, he has developed the drawings and the exhibition series ‘DEMENSCH’. The cartoons highlight the fact that people with dementia and their families need everyone around them to live a good life with dementia: the neighbour, the police officer, the bakery assistant and many others. Sharing a smile, a chuckle or even a laugh is expressly encouraged at the DEMENSCH travelling exhibition ‘Everyday Situations of People with Dementia’!
The exhibition was made possible by funding from BARMER as part of its self-help programme.
