Final presentations of this year's Softwarepraktikum

Sepsis monitoring app for smart watches

This year's internship focussed on the potential of wearables, e.g. smart watches, as a driving force in the healthcare sector. By continuously measuring and analysing vital signs, wearables can support medical treatment and contribute to a better healthcare system.

The internship was organised in cooperation with Thiem-Research GmbH, research institute at the Carl Thiem Klinikum. Members of the Thiem Research team gave an introduction to the development of medical software for wearables. Each student team then had the task of developing a sepsis monitoring app for a smart watch. Sepsis can occur in various infectious diseases and can be life-threatening if symptoms are not recognised and treated early enough. Based on a medical guideline for the treatment of sepsis, the app should record, analyse and display relevant measured values from the watch and, if necessary, issue a warning. Each of the four teams consisted of 4-6 Bachelor students and was supervised by a tutor (Agile Coaching). The teams were also accompanied by Master's students (architecture and quality coaching) from the software engineering practical course (module 11290).

As part of the software internship, Bachelor's students acquire knowledge and practical experience in the planning and realisation of a larger and practically relevant software project. This includes technical skills such as analysis, design, testing and programming as well as social skills such as group coordination, time management and presentation.
