Online symposium: School without hate - Selecting and implementing suitable programmes to prevent hate speech
On the internet and in everyday school life, children and young people increasingly encounter derogatory expressions about people based on their religion, origin, gender, sexual orientation or appearance, i.e. about people as members of certain social groups. This is hate speech. Studies show that hate speech can potential have negative consequences for children and young people, for coexistence at school and for society as a whole.
Many programmes and tools are available to schools and educators to tackle this problem. The variety of programmes and their different focuses, methods and formats make it difficult for practitioners to make an appropriate choice. Now, for the first time, there is a systematic quality assessment of national and international anti-hate speech programmes that takes into account practical and academic criteria and supports educators in selecting and implementing appropriate programmes.
