STEM in the focus of "Science meets school"

Around 210 pupils will be taking part in the popular event format for school classes at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) from 28-30 January 2025.

In workshops, young people in grades 11-13 learn about scientific approaches to solving problems in scientific and technical (STEM) fields.

The groups each spend a day at the university. It starts on Tuesday, 28 January 2025 at 9 am. The meeting point is the Audimax lecture theatre at BTU's Cottbus main campus. Here, the 80 or so young people who have registered will get their first impressions of what studying feels like. They come from Cottbus, Eisenhüttenstadt and Templin. A total of 210 pupils and their teachers are guests at the BTU for all three days of "Science meets School".

Christiane Land, Head of Study Orientation at BTU , knows from experience what is important for the pupils. She says: "For many of them, it's a new experience to get a taste of university life. There's a certain amount of excitement involved. After the welcome, we give an overview of the day. There's a lot of excitement involved, because our workshops don't just supplement school knowledge with practical applications and experimental solutions. Participants also learn about our study programmes and research topics. This is well received and is thanks to the dedicated support of our teaching staff." An additional highlight for the students is lunch in the university canteen at student prices, which is made possible for this event by Studierendenwerk Frankfurt (Oder).

A total of twelve workshops are on the programme this year. The natural science and engineering topics include, for example, vibrations in machine and bridge construction, route optimisation for drones, innovative flight propulsion systems and everything about water as a resource or high-voltage topics. Here, the students not only learn about practical research work, but also about the variety of study programmes offered at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.
