Doctorate

In many professional fields, both within and outside academia, a doctorate is the first step in an academic career. It demonstrates your ability to conduct independent scientific research, as evidenced by the completion of a dissertation and its successful defence.

Before committing to a doctoral project, it is important to recognise that it is a project that will take several years and require independence, good time management and perseverance. You will be best equipped to meet these challenges if your motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree stems from your enthusiasm for research and your chosen dissertation topic.

Ways to Pursue a Doctorate

If you decide to begin a doctorate, BTU offers various pathways to help you successfully complete your doctoral research.

Individual Doctorate

As part of a traditional individual doctorate, you will work independently on your research topic. This form of doctorate allows you to organise your research and dissertation work more flexibly to suit your personal circumstances. At the same time, it requires a high degree of initiative, independence and motivation.

Doctoral degrees can generally be obtained at all six BTU faculties, and since 2020, at the Joint Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg too.

Structured Doctoral Programmes

In addition to individual doctorates, the BTU also offers structured doctoral programmes. These include a study-like, fixed qualification programme and promote exchange among doctoral candidates. However, in order to pursue a doctorate in this way, you must go through an application process, for which sufficient time should be planned.

Binational Doctorate

Whether you choose an individual or structured doctoral programme, you can be supervised by BTU and a foreign university as part of a binational doctorate (Cotutelle de Thèse). You will write a dissertation and, if you pass, receive an equivalent doctoral degree from both universities, which will be recognised in both countries in it´s valid form.
