Structural change conference of the lignite regions in Hoyerswerda

The Structural Change Conference for Lignite Regions of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) has established itself as a central forum for dialogue and practical exchange in the nationwide coal mining dialogue since it was first held at the BTU in 2023. It brings together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities of regions undergoing structural change. The third edition of this conference will take place from 26 to 27 November 2025 in Hoyerswerda under the motto "Local impetus - regional impact - (inter)national visibility".

With a special focus on promoting innovation and cooperation between science, politics, administration and practice, the event will focus on topics such as successful communication and participation processes in the transformation, the future of work through digital solutions, sustainable spatial design and economic structures as well as the reuse of former mining regions. BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is one of the central academic partners of this conference and will be involved with a workshop on places of remembrance and the future.

Conference participants can expect a high-calibre keynote speech, intensive panel discussions, practical specialist workshops and excursions to the region. In addition, numerous networking opportunities offer valuable opportunities to gain new impetus for your own work in structural change.
