The centre is a central scientific institution of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus - Senftenberg within the BTU research line "Global Change and Transformation Processes". It is focussed on the investigation of processes of landscape transformation.
For the realisation of research projects, the centre offers support in the search for and use of the necessary research sites in Lusatia for field trials.
To this end, the centre is developing and coordinating the "Living Lab Lusatia", which comprises various exemplary landscape sections from Lusatia in the process of transformation. The Living Lab's repertoire of areas includes post-mining sites in Brandenburg's post-mining landscapes, including the "Hühnerwasser" research platform. The Hühnerwasser catchment area serves as a landscape observatory for the long-term monitoring of interactions between different ecosystem compartments and reactions to changing environmental conditions.
