Description of the study programme
Goals of the programme
The Bachelor's degree programme "Instrumental and Vocal Performance and Teaching (IGP)" is a German-language study programme that provides training in artistic, music pedagogy and music theory/musicology.
The IGP study programme trains prospective instrumental and vocal teachers for teaching at public and private music schools, for teaching in self-employment and for freelance artistic practice in the disciplines of "Classical Music", "Jazz/Rock/Pop" and "Elementary Music Pedagogy".
In the "Classical Music" and "Jazz/Rock/Pop" disciplines, students must choose a major artistic subject (instrument or Singing) and a minor subject; in the "Elementary Music Pedagogy" discipline, students must choose an instrument or singing as an alternative from the "Classical Music" or "Jazz/Rock/Pop" disciplines and a minor subject as part of the "Elementary Music Pedagogy" major artistic subject.
All three disciplines focus on the acquisition of practical artistic and pedagogical skills and the development of a scientifically sound awareness of the prudent performance and communication of music in different social contexts.
The IGP study programme can be studied either in the general or, depending on the availability of the advertised positions, in the dual-practice-integrating form of study.
Completion of the programme leads to the academic degree of Bachelor of Music.
Content structure and course of study
Over the course of eight semesters, students develop both their technical playing or singing skills and their means of musical expression in their chosen major artistic subject and acquire the ability to analyse their own artistic, communicative and social learning progress in a differentiated way through the accompanying Music Pedagogy, Music Theory and Musicology modules and to transfer the insights gained from this to the initiation and support of musical education processes for children, young people and adults of all ages and developmental stages. The reflection and action skills acquired during the course enable graduates of the IGP study programme to plan, design and evaluate instrumental, Singing or elementary music group lessons in a didactically variable and methodologically flexible manner, depending on the chosen discipline. Alongside the degree programme, particular importance is attached to artistic and pedagogical practice through teaching internships and work shadowing in regional music schools. The compulsory electives from the third year onwards give students the opportunity to specialise in the area of ensemble and group conducting, and the final Bachelor's thesis offers the opportunity to develop an individual professional profile in three alternative formats.
