Sister Country Burned Down - On Contract Workers during and after the GDR

AN EXHIBITION BY REISTROMMEL E.V. (March, 28th until April 04th) In 1989, more than 90.000 contract workers still supported the fulfillment of plans in an ailing GDR economy. Thus, nearly half of all foreigners living in the GDR were contract workers and as such brought to the country to have cheap labour for a limited timeframe.

The contract workders were from Hungary, Poland, Algeria, Cuba, Mosambic, Vietnam, Angola, North Korea, and China. By coming to the GDR, the young people tried to escape war and ruined economies in their home countries, where they also earned less.
