BTU Advent calendar: Door 2

Math ace Niklas Füller has a very special hobby: artistic riding. He is a member of the Ompah-Kunstreitertruppe, which his grandpa founded 44 years ago. Today the student tells us how he spends Christmas.

Do you have a specific Christmas custom?
The Christmas season is a bit quieter, you spend a lot of time with the family, which is a very nice tradition. On every Advent we sit together in the evening in a cosy round and do nothing but talk. That's the nice thing about Christmas time, that as a family, where normally everyone is busy, you spend a few more contemplative hours together. On Christmas Eve we traditionally have pork knuckle with sauerkraut and after that it's time for presents. However, we throw these out, only those with a 6 are allowed to draw a present and if you are lucky, it is even for yourself. But don't worry, no one goes away empty handed.

When and how do you decorate the Christmas tree?
The Christmas tree will be decorated on December 24th. What all belongs on the tree, everyone can decide for himself. It is always colorful, probably much too overloaded and decorated with a lot of nerve food.

Do you take a break from training at Christmas or will you continue training?
Yes, we will continue training at Christmas. Of course the horses have to be taken care of every day of the year, including Christmas. However, it will be quieter then. Mostly we train in small groups on the 24th and 25th in the morning and on the 26th of December in the afternoon. Even for club members who are not in Cottbus because of their studies or profession, but who are in Cottbus over Christmas, it has become a tradition to train together over Christmas. Some parents are also happy if their children are out of the house in the morning, so the excitement doesn't build up.

What do the horses get for Christmas?
A very interesting question. They get a small extra portion of oats, but I honestly don't know if they know that this is related to Christmas. In any case, they are happy about it.

Niklas Füller has been fascinated by math since his primary school days. Since the winter semester 2018/19, he has been studying Applied Mathematics at BTU.
