Closed value cycles for lithium-ion batteries

On June 1, 2022, a scientific symposium was held at the Senftenberg campus as part of the 4th Korean-German Conference of the ReLioS network, which was jointly organized and conducted by Prof. Dr. Jörg Acker from the Department of Physical Chemistry and i-vector Innovationsmanagement GmbH.

ReLioS stands for "Re-use and Re-cycling of Lithium-ion Battery Systems" and is a German-Korean development network of research institutions, industrial companies, and small and medium-sized enterprises from both countries that are working towards the common goal of creating closed value-added cycles for lithium-ion batteries. This includes the technological, scientific and entrepreneurial aspects, such as questions of standardization, digital identification of lithium-ion batteries as well as scenarios for the further use of batteries after their first life cycle (second use), for example as energy storage. Another focus is on technologies, process developments and questions of automation for recycling lithium-ion batteries in order to process the battery materials contained directly for reuse in new batteries or to extract the important metal compounds from them that are required for the production of new battery materials.

The Korean delegation consists of representatives of companies and research institutions from the Daegu-Gyeongbuk economic region in southern Korea. This region is the heart of South Korea's high technology, home to internationally outstanding companies in the automotive, electronics and battery industries. The scientific symposium aims to deepen cooperation with Korean partners and to identify opportunities for collaboration with the BTU and companies in the region. To this end, the research work and cooperation projects underway at the BTU in the fields of physical chemistry and process and plant engineering will be presented and discussed.
