The Children's University sheds light on the origin and functions of money

"Where does money actually come from?" - this question will be explored on Thursday and Saturday, June 16 and 18, 2022, in the current online lecture of the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg Children's University.

Money is a means of payment and a natural part of our everyday lives. But where does it actually come from? In the past, there was only as much money in circulation as was backed by gold reserves. Prof. Dr. Kay Hempel explains to the participants of the Children's University whether today's currencies are still hedged in metals.

The speaker from the BTU's Institute of Business Management is head of the ABWL department, in particular financial economics and financial services, and teaches in the applied business administration program. In his presentation, Prof. Hempel will also explain what is meant by the term helicopter money and reveal how much money is in circulation. Among other things, the children will learn what the signature on banknotes means and what functions money has in a market economy.

Pupils from grades three to six are invited to attend the Children's University lecture "Where does money actually come from?" from the comfort of their sofa at home.
