Open BTU: Changing times in the energy, industry and transport sectors (lecture evening)

Lecture series "Open BTU" in the winter semester 2022/23

Open BTU Lecture Evening: Changing Times in the Energy, Industry and Transport Sectors

1st lecture

My - Your - Our Energy Turnaround: Social participation in the transformation processes of the German energy system

The goal is set; in 2030, 80 percent of our electricity needs are to be covered by renewable energies, an intermediate step towards climate neutrality by 2045 at the latest. The path is clear; among other things, we need a massive expansion of wind and solar energy. But who will lead the way? All of us! The lecture gives an overview of the current status of the energy transition in Germany and shows in particular the importance of social participation.

Prof. Dr. Christin Hoffmann, BTU, Department of Decarbonization and Transformation of Industry and Research Group Leader of the Energy Economics Lab in the Energy Innovation Center

2nd lecture

Basic material production in Germany - challenges for a climate-neutral industry

Around 24 percent of the greenhouse gases emitted in Germany are attributable to the industrial sector. This makes industry the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in this country after the energy sector. At the same time, industry is of central importance to Germany as a business location. This gives it a crucial responsibility and role in achieving greenhouse gas neutrality. Avoiding process-related emissions generated in basic material production is a particularly major challenge for energy-intensive industries. A fundamental transformation of industrial production processes is therefore necessary for Germany to become a climate-neutral industrial location in the future. Of particular importance here are the introduction of innovative technologies of the future and alternative production processes. In some industries, this will lead to new and thus, in some cases, to a transformation of entire production sites.

Dr. Bernd Wenzel, Head of the Competence Center Climate Protection in Energy-intensive Industries (KEI)

3rd lecture

Climate-friendly flying? We are researching the mobility of the future

Flying is considered a particularly climate-damaging way to travel, as aircraft consume a lot of energy and emittedCO2 is broken down more slowly at altitude. The aviation industry has therefore set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Achieving this goal in just under 30 years poses major challenges. Development times for new engines must be drastically shortened. This is precisely where the chesco research center, which is currently being established at the BTU, comes in. Here, research is being conducted into innovative drive systems and a rapid innovation cycle is being facilitated. During the event, chesco will introduce itself and report on the current state of research in the field of electric and hybrid-electric drives.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Höschler, BTU, Chair of Aircraft Engine Design and Head of chesco (Center for Hybrid Electric Systems Cottbus/Structural Change)

Moderation of the lecture evening: Prof. Dr. Magdalena Mißler-Behr, BTU, Chair ABWL, in particular Planning, Innovation and Foundation

About the lecture series Open BTU

From October 19, 2022 to January 25, 2023, the public lecture series "Open BTU" offers interesting insights into exciting scientific fields. This semester's topic is "Energy transition and structural change in Germany and globally". Current research approaches of the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg are incorporated into the interdisciplinary lectures.

With this educational format, which is open to all interested parties, the university's Center for Continuing Education supports lifelong learning and promotes the transfer of knowledge and ideas in the region by addressing socially relevant issues. In doing so, the BTU cooperates with other universities and institutions. After each lecture, there will be an opportunity for questions and exchange with the speakers. Interested parties are cordially invited to attend the wide range of events.

The lecture evening will take placein Audimax 1 at the BTU's central campus (Konrad-Wachsmann-Allee 3, 03046 Cottbus).
