#UseYourVote - European elections 2024

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) and Euroregion Spree-Neiße-Bober with Europe Direct Guben (EDIC) as well as the City of Cottbus invite you to information and discussion on the occasion of the European Parliament elections: Thursday, May 23, 2024, 5 p.m., Stadthaus Cottbus, Erich-Kästner-Platz 1, 03046 Cottbus

The countdown to the European elections is on: On June 9, 2024, every Lusatian vote for a strong and united Europe matters. All Lusatians are called upon to vote. This is the only way they will have the opportunity to determine the people who will decide on issues such as climate change, employment and the protection of our rights and freedoms.

A special innovation this year is the lowering of the voting age to 16. - This is a great opportunity, because young people are the future of our region.

Prof. Jan Hoffmann, Center for Law and Administrative Sciences at BTU, emphasizes in this context: "It is of the utmost importance that both young and older people are informed about the work of the European Parliament and that they learn what a great asset democracy is. Together with interested citizens, young people should have the opportunity to engage with regional candidates, ask questions and exchange experiences. This is what the 'Cottbus European Talks' are for and they are a unique forum in Germany. Nowhere else can almost all regional candidates be put through their paces." On the importance of the European Parliament, he adds: "According to Article 14 of the EU Treaty, the European Parliament acts jointly with the Council as the EU legislator and exercises budgetary powers with it. It performs tasks of political control and advisory functions in accordance with the Treaties. Its importance is therefore outstanding."
