In the name of freedom
A stage for science and a lively debate about freedom will be offered by the Staatstheater Cottbus on Saturday, September 21, 2024, 7.30 pm, in the Great House.
Under the heading "In the name of freedom", science and theater will meet on the eve of the Brandenburg state elections as part of a theater assembly. The theater will become a place for public discourse on democracy and the resilience of society.
Visitors can discuss the future of our society with historian Prof. Dr. Hedwig Richter and moderator Prof. Dr. Melanie Jaeger-Erben, Professor of Technical and Environmental Sociology at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, under the motto "We have a choice". Prof. Dr. Hedwig Richter, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, will be a guest at the third theater assembly of the "In the Name of Freedom" project at Universität Hamburg as part of the Science Year 2024 - Freedom. Here, researchers and the audience are invited into a shared space for thought and discussion - on an open stage and in smaller, moderated table discussions.
The evening will be artistically designed by director Thorleifur Örn Arnasson, accompanied by actress Sophie Bock and performed by the BürgerSprech choir, the children's and youth choir and other artists from the Cottbus State Theatre ensemble.
The event will begin with a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Hedwig Richter. The focus will be on the question: How do we as a society face current crises and challenges such as the climate crisis or wars?
Admission is free. Free tickets are available from the Visitor Service (in the Great House, Schillerplatz 1, +49 355 7824 242), at the box office and online at www.staatstheater-cottbus.de
"In the Name of Freedom" is initiated and carried out by an interdisciplinary team from the Public History department at the University of Hamburg, led by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Logge, and the independent theater makers Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson and Uwe Gössel. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Science Year 2024 - Freedom.
Science Year 2024 - Freedom
The theme of the Science Year 2024 is freedom. Because it is of fundamental value and is under threat today in ways that have long been unimaginable. Two anniversaries this year underline its importance for Germany: 75 years of the Basic Law and 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
