Strong competition at the Lusatian bridge construction competition

"Which bridge is particularly strong and light?" - This question was posed on 12 December 2024 by many BTU students from the Cottbus and Senftenberg campuses as well as pupils from Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium Senftenberg and Georg Heinsius von Mayenburg School in the Senftenberg district of Brieske.

Numerous students, pupils and parents cheered on a total of twelve teams participating in the Lusatian bridge building competition with their self-constructed structures at the Konrad Zuse Media Centre on the BTU campus in Senftenberg.

The "Bridge of Dreams" team from the Georg Heinsius von Mayenburg School won the competition and with it the new challenge cup. With a weight of just 289 grams, their bridge had a breaking force of 2769 newtons, which is the equivalent of around 277 kilograms. Second place went to the "Green Wonder" team from the first semester of the dual study programme in Mechanical Engineering. Finally, the "Polybridge-enjoyers" from the first semester of the regular Mechanical Engineering study programme came in third place.

In the bridge building competition the Mechanical Engineering students once again had to construct a bridge using a maximum of 250 ice cream sticks, 20 metres of parcel string and wood glue to carry as much load as possible with as little weight as possible. The bridge models of the participating teams are tested alternately and under the same conditions on a specially developed test rig and loaded until they break.

The student bridge building competition was organised under the direction of Prof. Dr Sylvio Simon and Prof. Dr Matthias Ziegenhorn by teaching and research fellow Stephan Hernschier and Michael Weist from the Tool Making Machines chair.
The winning teams once again received prizes - provided by regional companies - and certificates. The Institute for Environmental Technology and Recycling Senftenberg e.V. (IURS) supported the competition, which was organised in parallel to the student Christmas market, in the usual way.
