Handover of an alumni chronicle of the Cottbus class of 1964 to 1967

A chronicle of many decades of seminar group meetings and community alumni culture

It is now 61 years since a group of young men specialising in road and bridge construction began their studies in Cottbus. Back then, the local university on the current main campus of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg was still called the Cottbus School of Civil Engineering and Road Construction (1963 - 1969). From 1964 to 1967, the seminar group from back then mostly sat in the same rooms where the current students still sit, sweat and complete their academic performances in Teaching Building 1 and the Main Building. In addition, the group lived almost entirely in the barracks, which have since been demolished, which of course creates an additional bond. There is not only a lot of history in the buildings, but also memories and constellations for lifelong friendships.

Due to the fact that during the GDR era, students studied in close class groups, many of the former seminar groups have a special bond during and after their studies. This special community means that almost all alumni from the former seminar group still meet up in class every year. Despite a corona-related cancellation, this tradition has continued over the years. With extraordinary dedication, the alumni have documented a chronicle of their annual meetings on over 800 handwritten pages. This valuable document not only reflects the deep bond between the group, but also has historical value.

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg can announce that this chronicle has now been handed over to the university and will be available for historical and scientific research purposes. Today, on 3 June 2025, the chronicle was handed over by alumnus Fritz-Walter Erler to alumni relations officer Daniel Ebert on behalf of the entire seminar group.
