Family-friendly working, research and study conditions at BTU

On 17 June 2025, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) was recognised for the third time for its work and study environment that promotes compatibility. It was one of 306 organisations to receive the audit family-friendly university certificate at a public award ceremony.

The family-friendly university audit certificate is a seal of quality for a strategically organised work-life balance policy. The BTU has thus repeatedly secured special recognition for its long-standing, sustainable and strategically anchored organisation of family-friendly working and study conditions. Since its initial certification in 2009, BTU has consistently pursued the goal of reconciling studies, career and family responsibilities. After two re-audits, the university has now successfully completed the third dialogue process.

"The compatibility of studies, career and family has long been a key concern for us at BTU. The renewed certification as a family-friendly university shows that we are on the right track with our offers and our university culture to make BTU an even more attractive place to study and work for university members and their families," emphasises President Prof. Gesine Grande.

The established services at BTU include a parent-child room, flexible working time models, family-friendly event formats, support services for employees with caring responsibilities and decentralised contact persons at all locations. This makes BTU one of the universities in Germany that has consistently met the audit's quality standards at a high level for over 15 years.

The audit berufundfamilie and the audit familiengerechte hochschule is the central programme of berufundfamilie Service GmbH and is based on an initiative of the non-profit Hertie Foundation. As a strategic management tool, the audit supports employers in sustainably shaping their family- and life-phase-conscious personnel policies and family-friendly working, research and study conditions. The audit records the status quo of the family- and life-phase-conscious measures already offered, systematically develops the company's individual potential and ensures that family awareness is anchored in the corporate culture with binding target agreements. Once this process has been successfully completed, an independent board of trustees made up of prominent representatives from business, science, politics and associations decides whether to award the audit certificate. berufundfamilie Service GmbH holds the Europe-wide licence for the audit, which is recommended by the leading associations of the German economy - BDA, BDI, DIHK and ZDH. www.berufundfamilie.de
