Surprise Flashmob Turns Campus Workout Into Brass Band Performance

A summer workout session on campus took a fun and unexpected turn last week when a student brass band of 50 musicians from our partner university Linköping University showed up unannounced — and turned the event into an impromptu party.

What began as a simple exercise break from the BTU Sports Department quickly shifted gears as the band appeared, instruments in hand, and launched into a lively performance. The surprise was met with smiles, laughter — and more than a few jaw-drops!

LiTHe Blås has been around for 50 years and has toured across Europe for over four decades. They’re known for their spontaneity: only five organizers and the bus driver know the band's next destination at any given time. The remaining 45 musicians usually find out where they’re playing just 15 minutes before their performance — making tuning the instruments a lower priority than having fun and enjoying the moment.

In fact, the group has such a fun and strong community that some students apply without knowing how to play an instrument. But hey, why should that be a problem? They simply learn as they go, together with the band. In one case, a professional concert trumpet player was assigned to play the flute. Why? Well, they already had enough trumpet players!

The flashmob served as a cheerful reminder that it’s okay to pause our routines. It celebrated spontaneity, humor, letting go of control, and last but not least — our vibrant international campus community.

It was a short but memorable interruption, offering a light-hearted moment that brought people together in an unexpected and joyful way. It showed how a mix of fresh air, exercise, music, and energy can brighten a day, create connection, and remind us not to take everything too seriously all the time.

A big thank-you to the student musicians of LiTHe Blås for bringing the surprise, the spirit, and the good vibes — and for making campus a little more lively on an otherwise ordinary Monday morning.
