Successful living and literacy at the centre of BTU's new Graduate College

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is establishing the Graduate College "Enabling a successful life through basic education and literacy" (GrAl) with a kick-off event at its Cottbus-Sachsendorf site on Tuesday, 11 February 2025.

In particular, interested practitioners and students are invited to attend the event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Building 7 on the campus at Lipezker Straße 47, Room 139.

The three-year project is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the state of Brandenburg with a total of around712,000 euros and is headed by Prof. Dr Juliane Noack Napoles, Chair of Education Sciences at BTU.

Together with her, four doctoral students, who are writing their dissertations as part of the Graduate College programme, are investigating social phenomena in the area of (low) literacy and basic education among adults. The research focuses on the associated causes, consequences and potentials from a structural and subject-orientated perspective with regard to a successful life.

Prof. Dr Juliane Noack Napoles emphasises: "One of the aims of the Graduate College is to develop seminars based on scientific research into the field of literacy and basic education. These are to form the basis of a further education programme to professionalise the staff of further education providers, which will be certified by the Centre for Continuing Education (ZWW) at BTU. We would therefore like to thank all experts, partners and interested parties who have made our kick-off event possible through their participation and support."

In addition to the presentation of the project goals, the event offers space for exchange, networking and inspiration. Together with experts, partners and interested parties, the aim is to develop ideas for a sustainable and equitable educational landscape.

Programme
Prof. Dr. Anke Grotlüschen, Professor of Lifelong Learning at the University of Hamburg, will give a keynote speech to kick off the project. GrAl fellows will present their main topics and dissertation projects. Various symposia with workshop character as well as a world café are planned.

The following workshops will be offered:

  • Research with people with low literacy (Prof. Dr Nina Weimann-Sandig)
  • A knowledgeable environment/risk and protective factors (Prof. Dr Anke Grotlüschen)
  • From shame to recognition in the context of low literacy (Graduate College doctoral students)
