Method development for the evaluation of the soils suitability for treatment with lime

Lime improved and solidified soils of the subsurface and substructure of roads and other traffic areas. These soils would otherwise be unsuitable for construction. Cost and time intensive qualification tests are needed to assess the suitability of soils for the treatment with lime. These tests usually lead to waive the effective use of lime for soil treatment.

The objective of this research project is:

  1. to clarify the behaviors of lime in the soil
  2. to develop a procedure that can predicted in a short time, how lime treatment causes an increase in loading capacity and a decrease of the weather sensitivity of soil.

Selected chemical tests appertain to the possible rapid tests, which are examined and compared with the conventional aptitude tests, e.g. the determination of the Ca binding capacity and the reactive aluminum and silicium part of the soil and the decrease of the unbound Ca(OH)2 in the soil-lime mixture.
