Resistance of hollow concrete paving stone against frost and De-icing salt exposure

The top layers of water-permeable and paved traffic areas consist usually of concrete block paving. The behavior of water-permeable paving stones of hollow concrete paving stone (from several manufacturers) has been systematically examined under various frost-thaw-circle influences and in several test series, the intensity of the exposures were systematically varied.

It appears that: permeable stone pavements of hollow concrete paving stone are able to resist to freeze-thaw durability. This resistance time depend on the de-icing salt concentration. During the researches no completely frost resistant pavement were found.  The quantity of freeze-thaw durability that the stones are able to absorb depends on the rigor of the frost load (Lowest temperature) and the de-icing salt concentration. Slight frost stress (- 5 ° C) causes few damages, nearly independent of the salt concentration. The higher is the de-icing salt concentration, the bigger is the probability of structural damage.
