First aid refers to life-saving and health-preserving immediate measures that are easy to learn and can be applied in medical emergencies, such as respiratory or circulatory arrest or haemorrhaging. In the rescue chain, first aiders are responsible for alerting the emergency services, securing the accident site and supervising the sick or injured person until professional help arrives.

Statutory accident insurance cover is regulated by SGB VII (Federal Law Gazette I No. 43/1996). Employees are insured by law in the event of an accident at work and/or occupational illness; this also applies to students during training and further education at universities.
Persons are exempt from insurance if they are covered by civil service accident insurance regulations. Statutory accident insurance cover is also provided for a large number of voluntary activities and assistance services, although these are not dealt with in detail here.
