According to the Occupational Safety Act and DGUV Regulation 2 "Company doctors and occupational safety specialists", employers/entrepreneurs are obliged to appoint occupational safety specialists.
Their task is to support the employer and the entrepreneur in occupational safety and accident prevention in all matters relating to occupational safety, including the humane organisation of work. In particular, as "occupational safety managers", they should help to anchor safety and health at all operational levels and integrate it into the design of work systems as early as possible. The actions of the occupational safety specialist are therefore decisive for the level of safety and health protection of employees in the company.
The tasks are expressed in the following points in particular:
- Advising the persons responsible for occupational health and safety
- Safety-related inspection of operating facilities, technical work equipment and work processes
- Monitoring the implementation of occupational health and safety
- Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety requirements
- Co-operation with other specialists, committees and institutions
