Minister President Woidke and US Ambassador Gutmann open the Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg in Cottbus

A unique learning experience, especially for children and young people in Cottbus: Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke and the Ambassador of the United States of America, Dr. Amy Gutmann, opened the Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg in the "Stadtforum K" in Cottbus on Monday, July 1, together with the Mayor of Cottbus, Tobias Schick.

Since July 1, 2024, the Newton Flight Academy has been offering a learning experience specifically designed to foster STEM enthusiasm in students. This initiative is part of a global network with locations in cities such as Beijing and Istanbul and was developed in close partnership with Boeing and FIRST Scandinavia. The Newton Flight Academy was opened in Cottbus after Minister President Woidke received a corresponding commitment from the company in September 2022 during his trip to the USA and talks with Boeing management.

Minister President Dr. Dietmar Woidke emphasized: "Lusatia and Brandenburg are exactly the right place for the Newton Flight Academy. After all, Brandenburg is currently in the midst of structural change and development. This process is characterized by a high level of dynamism and innovation. I am very grateful that with the Newton Flight Academy we now have a very special place of education that is aimed specifically at children and young people and awakens an interest in the natural sciences as early as possible. Excellent knowledge in the STEM subjects will become increasingly important in the future. My heartfelt thanks go to Boeing and First Scandinavia for their extraordinary commitment. They are actively shaping our future."

Dr. Amy Gutmann, U.S. Ambassador to Germany, said: "The Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg, in close partnership with Boeing, and other initiatives that bridge business, education and society, fulfill our shared German-American promise to create opportunities for success for future generations. We are excited about Boeing's commitment and look forward to the discoveries and innovations that this important new academy will produce!"

Heiko Witte, Manager of CHESCO GmbH: "It is a unique opportunity to bring the Newton Flight Academy to Cottbus and we are very grateful to be able to expand our research in sustainable aviation technologies and give young students the opportunity to learn about aerospace and flight. The opening of the first Newton Flight Academy in Germany makes us all very proud - our special thanks go to Boeing and FIRST Scandinavia as well as the city of Cottbus for their extraordinary support."

The Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg will offer a wide range of Mathematics and science education activities in close cooperation with the student laboratory between BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and DLR. At the same time, the real-life flight experience will introduce many children and young people to the Mathematics and Physics of flight and thus provide an introduction to research into climate-neutral, sustainable mobility.

In addition to a modern classroom, the academy offers three full-motion flight simulators and laboratories that invite independent research. The Newton Flight Academy is primarily aimed at school classes and young people and also offers free programs for pre-school children. It will also be open to aviation enthusiasts from Cottbus and visitors to the city.

The Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg is a project of CHESCO GmbH and the first Newton Flight Academy in the European Union. The shareholder of CHESCO GmbH is the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. There are many joint projects - and the economic goal of the GmbH is to increase research and teaching at and around the BTU.
