Preserving and shaping

Experts discuss the relationship between Architectural Conservation and Architecture at the annual conference of the Arbeitskreis Theorie und Lehre der Architectural Conservation e.V.

In light of the current building revolution and the increasingly loud calls for a conversion or return to a building culture of repair and sustainability, the knowledge and experience of Architectural Conservation in dealing with existing buildings worthy of preservation appears more relevant and in greater demand than ever. At the same time, design is becoming increasingly relevant for Architectural Conservation, which is confronted with changing ecological and social realities. However, what could be a natural alliance and partnership between Architecture and Architectural Conservation is still more of an ideal than a reality.

It is clear that a business-as-usual approach is becoming untenable - but what exactly do the changes mean for the relationship between Architectural Conservation and Architecture? What common goals are we pursuing and how can we achieve them? How can we develop and fund a broad discourse on building culture in which Architectural Conservation and Architecture mutually strengthen and fertilise each other?

These and related questions will be explored at the conference in order to sound out the opportunities and possibilities of a closer interweaving of the two fields of activity.
