Public lecture: Art and artificial intelligence
How can creativity be defined in the interplay of human and non-human agents? How do AI-supported tools change the conditions and value standards of artistic work? - These are just some of the questions that Prof. Dr Oliver Deussen, an expert in visual data processing and creative artificial representation techniques, will address in his lecture.
Prof. Deussen sheds light on the topic in its methodological, philosophical and ethical context. He will also discuss how machine learning techniques challenge and redefine traditional concepts of authorship, intention and creativity in art. Based on the painting robot "eDavid", algorithmic art, rule-based systems of generative aesthetics and contemporary approaches such as AI-supported painting will be discussed. The development of artistic production in the age of artificial intelligence will be critically analysed. With his questions and controversial perspectives on the topic, Prof. Oliver Deussen invites an interdisciplinary discussion on new forms of artistic creation in the age of AI.
Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend the public lecture. Participation is free of charge and registration is not required.
Prof. Dr Oliver Deussen completed his studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and has been Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Konstanz since then. He was a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenzhen (SIAT) from 2008 to 2020 and President of the Eurographics Association from 2019 to 2020. His areas of interest are information visualisation, creative/artistic representation techniques as well as tracking methods and robotics. He has written papers on geometry processing, image-based modelling methods and sampling theory. He is currently one of the spokespersons of the Cluster of Excellence "Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour" at the University of Konstanz.
