Northern lights on the way to university: Charlotte's EUNICE semester in Finland

Charlotte is studying Environmental and Resource Management in the Master's programme at BTU and spent a semester abroad at the University of Vaasa in Vaasa, Finland, from August to December in the winter semester 2025/26.

"I became aware of the University of Vaasa through modules offered by the EUNICE network," she recalls. "As I've always been fascinated by Nordic culture, my stay in Finland was the perfect opportunity to experience it for myself."

Charlotte has particularly fond memories of the modern university buildings and the campus right on the water. "If you are interested in nature and outdoor activities, then Finland is exactly the right country. Every Finn I met was active outdoors in some way," says Charlotte. "It was also very pleasant that almost all the Finns understood and spoke English. That minimised the language barrier."

Charlotte would make the same decision to go to Finland every time: "The experiences I had there, I couldn't experience anywhere else. You rarely see so much unspoilt nature and animals. And if you're lucky, you might be accompanied by the Northern Lights on your way to university - what could be cooler?"

Charlotte would definitely recommend a semester abroad, even if you're worried about the language, the change or the distance. "My only tip would be: Have the courage! It's an opportunity you don't get very often in life and that's why you should take it and tell your children about it."
