Dive into the world of atoms at the Children’s University

“Am I a wave or a particle?” – this question will be the focus of the next lecture at the Children’s University at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) on 6 and 7 May 2026.

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 are invited to attend on Wednesday 6 May at 5 pm in the main lecture theatre of the Konrad Zuse Media Centre on the Campus Senftenberg of the University.

The speaker is Prof. Dr. Götz Seibold, dean of the Faculty of STEM – Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at BTU, who holds the chair for Computational Physics at the Institute of Physics.

About the lecture

In Physics, there is an important distinction between particles and waves. Particles are things you can touch. Waves, on the other hand, cannot normally be touched, such as light or sound. In this lecture, however, the children will learn that it is often impossible to distinguish between waves and particles – in particular when delving into the world of atoms.

The Children’s University lectures aim to spark an early interest in solving scientific problems and give children the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a university.
In this way, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg enables pupils in Years 3 to 6 to get a taste of university life and conveys approaches to solving everyday scientific phenomena in a child-friendly and exciting manner. Formative experiences designed to spark the youngest children’s interest in science and lower the barrier to entering a university are encouraged.

Outlook

The next Children’s University events will take place on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at 5 pm on the Campus Senftenberg and on Thursday, 11 June, at 3 pm and 5 pm on the BTU’s main campus in Cottbus, under the theme ‘Adventure in Space’. The officer is Stefan Richter, who heads the DLR_School_Lab of the German Aerospace Centre at BTU.
