Joint statement: Independent science strengthens Brandenburg

Universities, non-university research institutions and other organisations involved in science collectively make significant contributions to Brandenburg’s development. The state’s impressive success story over the last decade would be almost inconceivable without the strength of its scientific institutions.

Science thrives on transparency and a willingness to accept criticism. It is at the very heart of scientific work to continually scrutinise and refine one’s own findings. It is precisely this way of working that makes science effective, but also vulnerable – in particular when political interference, disinformation, economic dependencies or targeted attacks on individuals and institutions are on the rise.

This is precisely why science needs a reliable framework that protects its independence and safeguards its ability to act. This includes support structures for staff and researchers, digital and organisational security, and a stable infrastructure. Clear procedures for crisis situations are also necessary, as is a public culture that does not delegitimise scientific work but rather strengthens and recognises it.

The leadership of Brandenburg’s universities and research institutions see themselves as pillars of liberal democracy. They stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity whenever the freedom of science, enshrined in the Basic Law, comes under attack. This explicitly includes the promotion of diversity, equal opportunities and gender equality.

The State of Brandenburg, its universities and non-university research institutions, funding bodies and partners in science policy are working together to ensure their resilience. The aim must be to ensure that the academic community can work freely, courageously, openly and responsibly, even under pressure. Only in this way can it serve the common good in the long term and in a sustainable manner. This is the standard by which the signatories wish to be judged.

Alongside more than 70 representatives from Brandenburg’s universities and scientific institutions, BTU President Prof. Dr Gesine Grande is among the initial signatories of the joint statement.
