Expert forum to mark World Alzheimer’s Day

Organised in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Society of Brandenburg and the State Dementia Competence Centre, the event on the Campus Senftenberg brings Nursing Science research into direct dialogue with the experiences of those affected.

The event will not begin with a lecture, but with a round-table discussion featuring people who have personal experience of dementia. Only afterwards will two academics provide a specialist perspective on the topic: Prof. Dr Hermann Brandenburg will explore visions from the fields of practice, management and policy, whilst Prof. Dr Thomas Boggatz will highlight the conceptual gaps in care provision. These are questions at the heart of Nursing Science research at the BTU.

In the afternoon, the academic aspects will be brought to life: two parallel sessions will explore the language used to discuss dementia, as well as a sensory approach to experiencing the condition. The event concludes with the opening of the ‘DEMENSCH’ exhibition in the University Library, before Boggatz and Brandenburg summarise the day’s findings in a panel discussion.

Nursing Science students are also involved. For them, the forum forms part of their teaching on self-directed care in dementia and thus builds a direct bridge between research, teaching and public awareness.

The key message is that dementia knows no age limit and affects several generations simultaneously, spanning families, neighbourhoods and work colleagues.
